Arsenal's Controversial Partnership Agreement with Visit Rwanda Will Conclude This Coming Year

The North London club has officially announced that its contentious sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda will terminate in the coming June.

Context and Criticism

The partnership, reportedly valued at around ÂŁ10 million annually, was initiated six years ago and has since come under fire.

The backlash arises from the country's reported backing for the M23 militia in ongoing conflicts in the eastern areas of the bordering Congo.

Months ago, Arsenal faced allegations of committing a disrespectful act to the Congolese government by not arranging a meeting with Congolese diplomat Thérèse Wagner to address the sponsorship.

Agreement Framework and Goals

Visit Rwanda functions as a division of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a public entity.

Many speculate that Arsenal signed and upheld this partnership mainly to grow their African supporter base.

However, the deal has now ended after both parties “collectively determined” to go their separate ways.

“Jointly, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have surpassed the initial objectives of the partnership – supporting environmental protection and eco-friendly travel, motivating countless fans to explore Rwanda, and building a solid groundwork for visitor increase,” read an official Arsenal statement.

The announcement added that the partnership has also supported Rwanda's objective to emerge as an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and stage additional international competitions while implementing local football projects that have assisted numerous youth athletes and coaches enhance their abilities and encourage more involvement in athletics nationwide.

Executive Perspective and Fan Reaction

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, described the partnership as a “major expedition” and claimed it had been “advancing” the club's ambitions.

However, this perspective was not shared by a segment of the club's followers, with the campaign group Arsenal Peace Advocates holding rallies outside the North London venue during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against the French club in April's conclusion.

Activists unveiled a placard declaring “Drop Visit Rwanda” and provided wristbands to hide the Visit Rwanda logo on kits.

Industry Perspective and Fellow Clubs

In the same month, PSG extended their sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda until 2028.

Simultaneously, the Madrid-based team entered a new agreement for the identical duration that has resulted in the branding featured on the Madrid-based team's first-team and women's team jerseys.
