The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Tropical Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Acquired by US Investment Giant.
A major resort island situated within the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group for a sum reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is built upon, including a substantial array of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
