The Tragic Transformation Only 12 Months Has Caused in America

One year ago, the environment was entirely distinct. Before the national election, considerate citizens could admit the nation's serious imperfections – its unfairness and disparity – but they continued to perceive it as the United States. A democratic nation. A place where the rule of law meant something. A country led by a honorable and decent public servant, even with his older age and growing weakness.

These days, in late October 2025, numerous citizens barely recognize the nation we inhabit. Individuals suspected of being illegal immigrants are detained and shoved into transport, at times blocked from fair treatment. The left side of the White House – is being destroyed for a grotesque ballroom. The president is harassing his opponents or perceived antagonists and insisting federal prosecutors transfer a massive sum of citizen dollars. Armed military personnel are dispatched across metropolitan centers on false pretexts. The defense headquarters, relabeled the Department of War, has practically liberated itself of regular press examination while it uses possibly reaching close to a trillion USD in public funds. Universities, legal practices, media outlets are submitting under the president’s threats, and wealthy elites are treated like members of the royal family.

“The United States, shortly prior to its quarter-millennium anniversary as the globe's top democratic nation, has tipped over the brink into autocracy and totalitarianism,” an American historian, wrote in August. “In the end, more quickly than I imagined possible, it did happen in America.”

One awakes to new horrors. And it is challenging to understand – and agonizing to acknowledge – how severely declined we have become, and how quickly it unfolded.

However, we know that the leader was duly elected. Even after his highly troubling previous administration and even after the cautions associated with the awareness of the conservative plan – following Trump himself declared plainly he would rule as a tyrant solely at the start – sufficient voters selected him over the other candidate.

Frightening as today's circumstances may be, it's more frightening to understand that we are just nine months into this administration. Where will another 36 months of this decline position us? And suppose the three years becomes a more extended duration, because there is not anyone to stop this president from determining that additional tenure is required, maybe for security concerns?

Admittedly, not everything is hopeless. There are congressional elections the coming year that may bring a different governmental control, in case Democrats recapture the Senate or House of the legislature. There exist public servants who are striving to apply some accountability, such as Democratic congressmen that are initiating an inquiry concerning the try to cash appropriation from legal authorities.

And a national vote three years from now could begin our journey to recovery just as last year’s election placed us on this disappointing trajectory.

We see millions of Americans marching in public spaces across municipalities, similar to recent last weekend at democracy demonstrations.

An ex-cabinet member, wrote recently that “the slumbering force of the US is rising”, exactly as before post-McCarthyism in the 1950s or amid anti-war demonstrations or during the Watergate scandal.

On those occasions, the listing ship eventually was righted.

The author states he understands the signals of that revival and observes it occurring now. As support, he references the large-scale demonstrations, the extensive, cross-party resistance to a television host's removal and the near-unanimous rejection by reporters to accept military mandates they only publish authorized information.

“The dormant force perpetually exists dormant till some venality grows too toxic, a particular deed so disrespectful toward public welfare, specific cruelty so loud, that it is compelled but to awaken.”

It's a positive outlook, and I value his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will prove to be right.

In the meantime, the major inquiries remain: can America return to normalcy? Is it possible to restore its position in the world and its adherence to constitutional order?

Or must we acknowledge that the historical project functioned for a period, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My cynical mind indicates that the second option is correct; that everything could be finished. My optimistic spirit, though, convinces me that we need to strive, by any means possible.

Personally, working in journalism analysis, that’s about urging journalists to adhere, more completely, to their duty of scrutinizing authority. For different individuals, it could mean engaging with political races, or organizing rallies, or finding ways to safeguard ballot privileges.

Not even one year prior, we lived in an alternate reality. A year from now? Or after another term? The reality is, we cannot predict. All we can do is to attempt to persevere.
