The White Sox Land Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Major Two-Year Deal.
In a notable move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have officially added Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, completing a two-year contract bringing in the high-profile player.
Deal Structure and Incentives
The deal includes a $1 million signing bonus, issued within 30 days, combined with salaries of $16 million for the next season and seventeen million for the final year.
Importantly, Murakami's 2027 salary can increase based on award achievements in 2026:
- $1 million for being named the MVP award.
- Half a million dollars for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- A quarter-million for ranking between fourth and tenth.
- An identical bonus for earning the ROY honor.
His deal also stipulates that he will not be optioned to the farm system without his approval and makes him a free agent at the termination of the contract. Further benefits include a club-supplied interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.
Transfer Payment and Team Legacy
As part of the acquisition, Chicago owes a transfer fee of over $6.5 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club are also entitled to a 15% cut of 15% triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever player from Japan to represent the South Siders, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.
Player Profile
Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 in February, joins a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a 60-102 season, placing at the bottom in the American League Central but showing a significant improvement from the prior campaign.
Having earned Most Valuable Player honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is renowned for a record-breaking 2022 season where he launched 56 homers, eclipsing the single-season record for a Japanese-born player previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was shortened to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Despite fanning 64 Ks, he hit .273 with 22 home runs and 47 runs batted in.
Over his eight-season tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 career batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBIs, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Initially playing mainly at first base, he has since transitioned to third.
International Pedigree
Murakami's clutch hitting were on full display during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing double that drove in teammates for a dramatic one-run win. The following day in the championship game against the United States, he blasted a equalizing homer in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's eventual championship win.
The new White Sox addition is slated to be officially presented at a media availability on Monday.
