This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a long and happy life away from worry.”
The event, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, donated by a first responder, was named for the current slang trend of young people shouting “six seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Every time, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
