Why Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Faith' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

Whenever a teenage makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a key European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a quarter-final place.

At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes during pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that led to the clash with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated Pitarch following his debut.

"I have just achieved my dream with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have defied his age and experience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his personality," continued he. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are astonished to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.

"He will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before entering the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they appear in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has played for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

In a recent interview, the player said: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine chose La Roja, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team pursue future success.

After his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager treats me the same. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented following the success at Manchester.
